A sobriety milestone is a real achievement. Thirty days of choosing differently. A year of showing up. Ten years of a life that looks nothing like the old one. Marking those dates matters, and the right gift can say "I see it" without turning the moment into a speech.

But thirty days isn't the same as ten years, and the gift shouldn't be either. Here's how to match the gift to the milestone, plus what to write in the card and when to order.

If you're shopping for someone in recovery with no particular date in mind, our gift guide for someone in recovery covers the everyday version.

Before you buy: know how they mark it

People celebrate milestones very differently.

In 12-step programs, anniversaries are often marked with a medallion or chip at a meeting, and some people call the date their "birthday" or "soberversary." Other people track their days quietly in an app and never mention them out loud. Some people would love a party. Others would rather you never brought it up in front of anyone.

If you're not sure, follow their lead. If they've mentioned the date to you, it's usually safe to mark it privately. If they haven't, a general "proud of you" moment beats a gift with a number on it.

24 hours to 30 days: small, useful, quiet

The first month is about getting through the day. Gifts here should be low-key and practical, not a big deal. Think "this will make your mornings a bit easier."

  • The SOBER. mug (from $16). A daily-use ceramic mug in 11, 15 or 20 oz, dishwasher and microwave safe. The morning coffee becomes a tiny reminder of the choice.

  • The PR3Y Tee (from $20). A framed praying-hands graphic, open to whatever it means to them: gratitude, quiet, a moment's pause.

  • The SOBER. water bottle ($30). A 32 oz insulated bottle that makes "I'm good, I've got my water" an easy line at any party.

Add a card. At this stage, a few honest words often mean more than the gift.

60 to 90 days: something they'll use daily

By now, routines are forming. Ninety days is a meaningful milestone in a lot of recovery circles. Mark it with something that gets worn or used every week.

  • The OG Logo SBR Snap Back ($33). Embroidered, structured, one size. No guessing at fit.

  • The Live Free & Prosper Tee (from $25). An SBR crest wrapped in broken chains with LIVE FREE underneath. It says exactly what 90 days feels like.

  • A plan. Tickets to a show, a climbing session, a long breakfast somewhere good. You handle the logistics.

Six months: something that marks the change

Half a year sober is when a lot of people start to notice how different life looks. The gift can be a bit louder now, if they're the type.

  • The Doing It Sober Tee ($40). IM DOING THIS SH*T SOBER in a big vertical print. For the friend with a sense of humor about it.

  • The Heritage Seal T-Shirt (from $35). A quieter option: the SBR seal, EST. 2012, nothing spelled out.

  • A journal and a good pen, with a note on the first page about what you've noticed in the last six months.

One year: the big one

One year sober is a genuine landmark. This is the moment for something they'll keep for a long time.

  • The Original SOBER. Hoodie (from $55). The hoodie that started SBR in 2012. One word, distressed white on black or Team Red. If any piece says "one year," it's this one. It runs small, so size up.

  • The Original Logo Embroidery Hoodie ($100). The SBR Cartel wordmark embroidered instead of printed. The most finished-looking piece we make, for someone who'd rather not wear the word.

  • An experience with weight. A weekend away, a concert they've been wanting to see, a class they keep talking about.

Multi-year milestones: keep it personal

Two years, five years, fifteen years. At this point the person has built a whole life. Gifts work best when they're about that life, not the absence of alcohol in it.

  • Something tied to a passion they've developed: gear for the sport, supplies for the craft, a book by an author they love.

  • A Clean Cartel Faux Leather Crossbody ($40) for someone with a quiet sense of style and a lot of nights out ahead.

  • A handwritten letter about who they are now. This is the one people keep in a drawer for years.

What to write in the card

You don't need to be a writer. Short and true beats long and polished.

  • "One year. I see every day of it. Proud of you."

  • "You're more you than ever. Happy 90 days."

  • "Thirty days is not small. Thirty days is everything."

  • "Five years and still the most stubborn person I know. In the best way."

Skip the parts about how bad it used to be. They remember.

Order early

Most SBR pieces are made to order, which means delivery can take up to 3–4 weeks. If the date is close, go with something that's already in your hands (a plan, a letter, a reservation) and add the clothing as an "it's on the way" surprise.

What to skip

  • Alcohol-themed anything, including "funny" wine glasses and bar gear.

  • Gifts that reference the drinking rather than the person.

  • Surprise public celebrations unless you know they'd love one.

  • Non-alcoholic versions of their old drink, unless you're sure they're comfortable with them.

Mark the date, skip the speech

A milestone gift isn't about the object. It's proof that someone noticed the work. Pick something that fits the person, write two honest lines, and hand it over without making it a ceremony.
